As I sit here this beautiful Sunday morning, I cannot help but think of the many people who lost their lives 10 years ago. Where were you when the first plane hit? I was 21 years old, a senior in undergraduate nursing school, completing a clinical rotation in the Delaware County Jail. I was with one of my very best friends, Jessica Duncan (Keesling). We were passing morning medications to "O Block", which I understand is the highest security section of the Del. Co. jail. Terrified to even be in the jail next to prisoners, I quietly entered O Block and began to pass meds. I remember one prisoner who came running up to me (I jumped back) and he said... "Have you heard? A plane just hit the World Trade Center!" At this point, like many, we didn't even dream about a terrorist attack on the United States. Of course, when the second plane hit... we knew something awful was happening! Since we were in a federal building... we immediately were placed on lock down. This meant that we could not leave. We could not use electronic devices and we could not call home! After 1-2 hours (or what seemed like forever), we were permitted to exit the building. It was a tearful ride home. Jessica and I quickly reached for our cell phones to call our mothers to simply say "I love you"!
Thankfully, Jessica & I were both able to return home to our loved ones! My heart still aches for those who lost their lives on 9/11! You will never be forgotten!
I read this on facebook today and I must admit... it did bring a smile to my face. So proud to be an American!!!
